Past Major Activities



a. College based Micro-credit Programme

It provided skills development training leading liberal micro-credit support to the poor rural women to be involved in different types of economic activities under this programme in 1991. The student of a college worked as animators to run the programme. It was a donor funded project (PACT Inc, USA).

b. Empowering Rural Poor Women: Though Implementation of Collective Enterprises by Utilizing the Services of an Educational Institution

Different types of support services were provided to the rural poor women to reduce their absolute poverty. Some echo-friendly agricultural activities were introduced under this programme. NORAD funded this programme in 1991.

c. Development of Fish Drying in Chanda Beel

The aim of the project was to develop the technique of fish drying system for the fishermen/women of Chanda Beel (a vast water body) area. The Government of Bangladesh funded this project with the assistance of ADB in 1995.

d. Elimination of Child Labor Project

According to one estimate, more than 0.5 million children sort thousands of tons of garbage and collect various inorganic substances and plastic those have recycling value every day in the Dhaka city alone. They work in a most hazardous condition, which comprises death risk too. They also handle clinical waste in bare hands during garbage sorting from the city dustbin and other garbage dumping places. Unnayan Uddog implemented an action programme for this target group titled `Elimination of Child Labour Project’ to humanize the working environment of the children by introducing a suitable garbage management system (house to house garbage collection system) and providing them with a package of essential services to meet up their minimum needs for physical and mental development. The children were provided with basic education up to grade III, primary health care services and recreational facilities. House to house garbage collection system was introduced to substitute their income because they lost their previous income opportunity, which was essential for their family through the withdrawal from the garbage sorting. ILO-Bangladesh funded this project in 1996.

e. Arsenic Mitigation Programme

Unnayan Uddog implemented the `Arsenic Mitigation Programme’ with the assistance of UNICEF and Directorate of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) at Tangail Sadar Upazila in 2002-03. The objectives of the project were as follows:
 To disseminate information among community people regarding
     arsenic problem;
 To determine the extent of arsenic contamination through testing of
    tube wells;
 To identify arsenic affected patients and help them in taking
    treatment measures;
 To mobilize the local communities for arsenic mitigation through
     local government and existing NGOs and CBOs;
 To help the communities in selecting alternative safe water
     technologies;
 To find out alternative sources of safe water;
 To develop a replicable model of community-based arsenic
    mitigation that can be executed in other affected areas of the country
    in a wider scale.


f. Monitoring and Quality Improvement of Traditional Dug Well to Mitigate the Arsenic Problem

It implemented a research on above title under special allocation of the Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology for the financial year 2004-2005.
